Facebook Timeline = Facebook Time-Bomb?

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water….  Everytime Facebook makes a change it reminds me of that old line from ‘Jaws’.  For Social Media professionals, the latest Facebook change to hit Business Pages is going to leave some reeling and some reveling.

It all depends on your point of view.  If you’ve depended solely on ‘Fan gates’ or ‘Like Reveal Tabs’ or ‘Custom Tabs’ as they’re often called, this could be a serious blow to your Facebook presence as the platform literally obliterates this tool.

If you’re more focused on building relationships and engagement – it might not be all that devastating.

Already, though the announcement is literally only hours old, I’m already seeing ways that this ‘tragedy’ can be turned into ‘triumph’.  And, without resorting to paid Facebook ads, either.

In two words, I see the salvation of business Facebook Pages as …. Pinned Posts.

This gives us a phenomenal opportunity to make a post ‘sticky’ so that it’s always at the top of the page.  It’s an ideal way to keep events, competitions, breaking news and special offers top the mind and way above the fold.

The cover photo – although you’re not allowed to ‘sell’ or even encourage contact overtly, does give an opportunity to create an intriguing or entertaining teaser that lures visitors to look deeper.

So – my advice is to get your thinking caps on as to how to maximize this new opportunity.
