How many Social Media tools do you need to be effective?

When it comes to business and social media, a primary concern is which tools are most effective, and just how much time and effort it will take to implement an effective program.

Given the fact that there are close to 2,000 Social Media platforms available this concern is legitimate.  When we choose which to use for our clients, we always assess those that are best suited to your market and choose these as our main focus.

These will invariably include YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr and so on depending on what’s most appropriate for the business with which we’re working.

These major platforms are very important and special attention should be paid to how they are set up so that your corporate image and message is properly communicated.

However there are also many other less well known social media type venues that are not always immediately apparent, but nonetheless, if used correctly, can have a significant impact on your Social Influence score and online reputation.

For instance, there are many directory sites such as Merchant’s Circle, Online Yellow Pages and so on that have a high authority, and as such should be considered as part of the Social Media landscape.

Google Places is another often overlooked, yet very powerful Social tool that, when done correctly, can increase your Social Influence significantly.

Article marketing is another big one that is often looked at as a separate industry, but in reality, getting articles out into numerous venues creates an online web with huge advantages for both credibility and visibility and, because of these factors, can also be considered as part and parcel of Social Media.

If you’ve not yet considered the popular review sites such as Yelp, then this is something you’ll want to add to your Social Media arsenal.  By getting customers to post positive reviews, these high authority venues carry a huge weight in the Social Media world.

One of the most important social media activities is blogging.  With careful design and some knowledge of WordPress, blogs can be set up to either complement or replace a corporate web site.  The advantage of blogs is that the search engines love them and they’re highly visible to them, this of course, helps increase your rankings.

All of these elements fall under the broad category of Social Media, and form the basis of successful online marketing based on the principle: the more exposure, the better.
